MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- Former West Virginia soccer player Dan Stratford signed a senior developmental contract with D.C. United today. Stratford was drafted by D.C. United with the 10th pick in the second round, 24th overall, of the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft on Jan. 25, and joins former teammate Pat Carroll on the roster.
The two-year captain of the Mountaineers closed his collegiate career having tallied the most assists (27) and played in the most matches (85) in school history. Stratford netted 20 goals in four years.
The London, England, native was named to the all-BIG EAST second team and the NSCAA all-region third team following his performance last season.
“When D.C. United drafted Dan, they knew they were getting a good player,” comments Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc. “We are very proud of him and we look forward to watching him develop in his professional career.”
Stratfordjoins two other players from the 2007 senior class who have signed professional contracts. Senior defender Pat Carroll was signed with the D.C. United on March 3, while Midfielder Andy Wright signed a professional contract with the Scunthorpe United Football Club of the English Championship League in his native England on Jan. 3.
WVU closed the 2007 season with a record of 14-6-2, advanced to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST tournament and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. The Mountaineers were ranked No. 13 in the final NSCAA/adidas poll.
