Baseball: Defeats Rutgers 8-7 In 10-Inning Battle

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Dan DiBartolomeo hit an RBI single through the left side to plate Austin Markel for the winning run in the 10th inning, as West Virginia defeated Rutgers, 8-7, today, at Bainton Field in Piscataway, N.J.
After a scoreless ninth, the game went into extra innings, where DiBartolomeo’s RBI single plated Markel for the 8-7 win. Markel walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring the winning run.
West Virginia (20-6, 4-2 BIG EAST) finished with eight runs on eight hits and committed two errors, while Rutgers (8-14, 2-4 BIG EAST) collected seven runs on eight hits and committed two errors.
The Mountaineers were led by junior Justin Parks, who finished with two hits, two runs and one RBI, while DiBartolomeo recorded two hits, two runs and one RBI.
Sophomore Jarred Jimenez led the Rutgers attack with one hit and three RBIs, while senior Jon Gossard finished with two hits and one RBI.
WVU sophomore Chris Enourato (2-0) earned his second win of the season, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out four and walking three in 5.1 innings. Rutgers’ Ryan Beard (0-2) dropped his second decision of the season, allowing one run on two hits, striking out one and walking five in 4.1 innings of work.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the first inning, scoring two. Parks walked, advanced on a wild pitch, moved to third on Jedd Gyorko’s walk and scored on a passed ball. Joe Agreste then flew out to center field to plate Kuhn.
WVU added one in the second when DiBartolomeo was hit by a pitch, advanced to second off of Parks’ single and scored off of a Rutgers’ error, putting the Mountaineers up 3-0.
Rutgers answered in the second inning with a pair of runs. Luis Feliz flew out to right field to plate Gossard, and Jaren Matthews scored on a wild pitch by Billy Gross.
Tobias Streich grounded out to the shortstop to bring in Vince Belnome in the third inning, broadening WVU’s lead to 4-2. Belnome reached first on an error, advanced on Agreste’s ground out and reached third on a balk.
Rutgers scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Gossard hit an RBI single to right field to score Callahan, before Jimenez hit a two-RBI single through the left side, plating Gossard and Tom Edwards.
The Mountaineers answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to re-take the lead, 7-5. DiBartolomeo doubled down the left field line and scored when Parks hit an RBI single to center field. Gyorko then hit a two-RBI double down the left field line to plate Kuhn and Parks.
The Scarlet Knights scored one in the seventh and eighth innings to knot the score, 7-7. Edwards walked, advanced to second on Gossard’s walk and took third by a WVU error. Jimenez was hit by a pitch to bring in Edwards, closing the Mountaineer margin to one, 7-6.
In the eighth, Rutgers’ Dan Betteridge flew out to left field to plate Victor Cegles, who was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Donny Callahan’s double.
The Mountaineers return home to welcome Maryland-Eastern Shore to Hawley Field on Tuesday, April 1. The doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m.
