Tennis: WVU Drops Match to Coastal Carolina

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team broke its six-match winning streak after falling to Coastal Carolina, 6-1, on Saturday, March 29, at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center in Conway, S.C.
The Mountaineers (11-5, 2-1 BIG EAST) lost several hard-fought matches in singles competition and failed to earn the doubles point for the first time in six matches.
WVU’s lone singles victory came from sophomore Stephanie LaFortune at No. 6 singles. She defeated Fernanda Shalders of Coastal Carolina, 7-5, 6-3, to continue her impressive play.
The Mountaineers lost three matches that went to an extra set as Stacey Percival, Monica Lyskawa and Ashley Pilsbury fell victim to their hard-fought defeats.
At No. 1 singles Amy Pazahanick defeated Percival, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. Kim Webb followed with a win over Lyskawa at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
The trend of winning the first set was not enough as Pilsbury also jumped out to an early lead but was defeated by Maria Camberos at No. 5 singles, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Chanticleers (11-7, 1-2 Big South) won two of three doubles matches as Percival-Prinz garnered WVU’s only doubles victory over Pazahanick-Camberos, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot.
The Mountaineers head to Burlington, N.C., to play Elon University in their next match on Monday, March 31, at 2:30 p.m.
