MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University team swept Division II opponents Barton and Mount Olive by identical 9-0 scores on Wednesday, March 26, at Wilson, N.C.
The Mountaineers (11-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) got single victories from every performer, as junior Colleen Speaker and Gabriela Blaskovicova led the team with two victories apiece at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
Stephanie LaFortune had another stellar performance as she won both her doubles matches at the No. 2 spot. She also earned a win in singles play to extend her record to 8-1 during WVU’s last five matches.
Senior Monica Lyskawa won twice at No. 2 doubles and received another victory at No. 2 singles. Stacey Percival followed suit with a win at No. 1 singles and two doubles victories as well.
The Mountaineers were able to get everyone involved through both matches. Senior Natalia Prinz added another win to her season at No. 3 singles, while Ashley Pilsbury and Monique Burton garnered victories in singles competition as well.
WVU Head Coach Marc Walters was grateful for allowing everyone to play, and felt the weather was a nice change of scenery after playing indoors for most of the season.
"It was our first day outside of the year, and it gave us a chance to play everyone and allow them to get comfortable chasing down balls while getting used to being back in the sun,” says Walters. “Tomorrow we'll get to work some more on our fitness and timing, and try to get ready for a couple tough matches coming up on the weekend.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, March 29, at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, S.C., before heading to Elon University near Burlington, N.C., on Monday, March 31.
