MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s swimmer sophomore Morgan Callaway has been named West Virginia University athlete of the week for her performance this season.
Callaway represented the Mountaineers at the BIG EAST Championships by breaking six school records. She then went on to re-break two of those school records at the 2008 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, at Ohio State on March 20-22.
At the BIG EAST Championships, Callaway broke a record in the first leg of the 800 free relay event with a time of 1:47.76, which breaks a school-record for the 200 free. The 800 free relay team of juniors Lindsey Largo and Taylor Stallings and sophomore Shaunna Purtell, Callaway then posted a time of 7:20.12, to also set a school record. Callaway also broke a school record in the 200 back (1:57.95).
Callaway then teamed up with fellow sophomores Kayla Andrews, Stephanie Shupe and Purtell to break the school-record with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:20.35. At NCAAs, Callaway broke school records in the 500 free (4:46.02) and in the 100 back (54.13).

Senior Kevin Donohue will represent West Virginia University at
the 2008 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on
March 27-29, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way,
Wash. Donohue will be competing in the 100 and 200 breast events.

Lindsey Largo traveled to Columbus, Ohio on March 20-22, to
compete in the 2008 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving

At the NCAA Championships, Callaway broke two school records including records in the 500 free (4:46.02) and in the 100 back (54.13) … Callaway also finished 25th in the 200 back with a time of 1:57.49 … Andrews competed in the 50 free (22.87) while also finishing 35th in the 100 free with a time of 49.23 … Largo placed 49th in the 500 free (4:52.36), 40th in the 400 IM (4:26.04) and 26th in the 1650 free (16.29.89).

The West Virginia University baseball team will play host to a doubleheader against Morehead State on Tuesday, March 25, before traveling to Rutgers for a three-game conference series this weekend.

The Mountaineers swept BIG EAST rival Pitt in a three-game series at Hawley Field this past week, before defeating Coppin State, 26-3, on Monday ... with the wins, WVU has now won nine straight ... the Mountaineers are 14-2 in the month of March ... last week’s BIG EAST Player of the Week, Tyler Kuhn, also earned NCBWA Hitter of the Week honors and was named to the College Baseball Foundation’s National All-Star Lineup.
WVU leads the BIG EAST in every major offensive category, as well as ERA (3.21) ... they are second in opponents average (.236) and hits allowed (144) ... Jedd Gyorko leads in batting average (.512) and hits (43) while Tyler Kuhn is first in runs scored (26), Jordon Yost has the most doubles (8) and Billy Gross has the lowest ERA (1.32) and opponents average (.163).

Third baseman Vince Belnome and left-handed pitcher Steve Morrison were named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll as announced by the league office on Monday, March 24 … the sophomores were honored for their efforts as West Virginia swept BIG EAST rival Pitt in a three-game series this past weekend.
Belnome hit a home run, scored eight runs, had nine hits and recorded five RBIs over the Panthers … for the weekend, Belnome had a .643 batting average and recorded a .800 fielding percentage.
Morrison pitched a complete game, giving up one run on three hits, striking out six and walking three to lead the Mountaineers to a 8-1 victory on March 22, for the sweep.
This was the fourth consecutive week that at least one Mountaineer has been honored by the league.

The West Virginia University tennis team travels to Wilson, N.C., to play Barton on Wednesday, March 26, at 1 p.m. … WVU will follow with a match against Mount Olive at 6:30 p.m. on the same day.

The Mountaineers (9-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) defeated their first Division II opponent of the season after toppling California (Pa.), 6-1 … WVU was led by the play of senior Natalia Prinz and freshman Ashley Pilsbury, who racked up two victories apiece in singles and doubles competition … Monica Lyskawa beat one of the better Division II players in Inga Chilingaryan, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles … Stephanie LaFortune continued her excellent play with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win over Marina Quintana at No. 6 singles … Colleen Speaker also defeated Nina Kowalski, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-3 … WVU won all three doubles matches to earn another point.

West Virginia will serve as host of the 2008 EAGL Championships on Saturday, March 29, at 4 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum … WVU and the other seven conference teams will be competing: George Washington, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, NC State, Pitt and Rutgers.

Freshman Amy Bieski won the all-around with 38.975 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Mountaineers fell to Ohio State 194.775-194.025 on March 22, at the WVU Coliseum … the meet was the final home regular season meet for seniors Jaime Gold, Rachel Hardin, Katie McGregor, Margaret Ann Moore and Kara Weaver … West Virginia (16-8, 9-0 EAGL) got off to a great start on vault with 49.100 points behind 9.85s from Jaime Gold and Chelsi Tabor … Bieski and Erica Watson each posted 9.825s, while Emily Kerwin scored a 9.75 … Gold and Tabor would tie OSU’s Beth Ann Ballard as vault champions … it was the fourth time in the last six meets that West Virginia tallied at least 49 points on that apparatus … West Virginia totaled 48.675 points on bars … all five Mountaineers had 9.7s or better with Watson landing a 9.775 for second place, but WVU lost junior leader Mehgan Morris to injury … the Mountaineers managed to score just 47.825 points on the balance beam … sophomore Kiersten Spoerke tied a career high with an outstanding routine for a 9.85 and was the beam champion … on floor, sophomore Shelly Purkat and Watson each had 9.825s to tie for second place at the

Junior Kurt Brenner fell one win shy of giving West Virginia its seventh straight All-American honor as the Mountaineers finished in 31st place (13.5 team points) at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. ... WVU qualified seven wrestlers to the tournament but none was able to reach the final eight in his respective weight classes ... David Jauregui (149), Zac Fryling (157), Donnie Jones (165), Chance Litton (174), Kurt Brenner (184), Jared Villers (197) and Dustin Rogers (HWT) represented WVU as each won at least one match in the tournament ... six of the seven wrestlers competed on the second day.

Brenner led the Mountaineers with a 3-2 record at the tournament ... he was defeated by No. 7 Phillip Keddy of Iowa in his final match, 5-3 ... he avenged an early-season loss to Purdue’s A.J. WVU (25-7) got through the first round of the NCAA Tournament, sliding past No. 12 seed New Mexico 61-60, at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. … senior Chakhia Cole’s foul line jumper with 17.5 seconds left gave the Mountaineers a one-point lead and WVU defense held up at the other end of the floor to send West Virginia into round two … Cole led all scorers with 22 points, while senior LaQuita Owens finished with 13 points to round out double-figure scorers for WVU … Cole had 11 rebounds as well, to post a double-double … WVU now boasts 25 wins on the year, second-most in school history … the Mountaineers also improved to 4-4 in all-time NCAA tournament play and 2-2 under Mike Carey.
In second round action, fourth-seeded Vanderbilt used a 16-5 run during the middle of the second half to break open a tie game and cruise to a 64-46 victory over fifth-seeded West Virginia Monday night at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. … the Mountaineers (25-8) led 29-27 at halftime after Meg Bulger drilled a 3 with 1:16 left in the half … he first half was a game of runs with Vanderbilt jumping out to a 16-9 lead and then WVU responding with a 15-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 24-18 after a Bulger lay up with 5:24 to play … Olayinka Sanni led West Virginia with 14 points while Bulger and Owens pitched in 13 and 10
