Gymnastics: WVU Posts Best Score Since 2004

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team posted its best score in four years with 196.175 points to top No. 24 Minnesota, New Hampshire and Rutgers Saturday night at the WVU Coliseum.
The score was the highest since WVU totaled 197.050 points to win the 2004 EAGL Championships in Pittsburgh and was the 16th best score in school history.
Minnesota took second with 195.375 points, while New Hampshire claimed 193.400 points and Rutgers was fourth with 188.575 points.
WVU (16-7, 9-0 EAGL) was led by freshman Amy Bieski and Erica Watson. Bieski put together a career-high effort as an all-arounder, scoring 39.275 points to become meet champion. Watson placed third in the all-around with 39.200 points.
The Mountaineers completed their exceptional night with 49.125 points on floor. Bieski was the floor champion with a 9.875, while Shelly Purkat and Kiersten Spoerke each earned 9.85s.
Kiersten Spoerke’s career-high 9.85 led West Virginia on beam in rotation three. WVU totaled its best amount of the season with 49.025. Purkat and Mehgan Morris scored a 9.825 and 9.8, respectively, while Bieski and Watson each scored 9.775s.
On bars, Morris led all WVU gymnasts with a 9.875 as the Mountaineers totaled 48.825 on the event. Bieski and Watson each added 9.8s with solid routines. West Virginia narrowly held its lead ahead of Minnesota, 98.025-97.900, through two rotations.
West Virginia opened its evening impressively with a season-high 49.200 points on vault to take an early lead. Jaime Gold posted a season-best and tied a career high with a 9.9, while Bieski and Watson had 9.825s. Vault specialist Chelsi Tabor nailed her routine for a 9.875. Gold and Tabor finished 1-2 in the individual meet results.
