MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Tyler Kuhn finished with three hits, blasted a career-high two home runs and drove in a career-high seven runs, and freshman Jedd Gyorko tied a school record with five hits and finished with three RBIs to lead West Virginia to a 21-3 win over St. Bonaventure, today, at Hawley Field.
Third baseman Vince Belnome also broke a personal record when he registered five RBIs. The sophomore hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning and closed the game with two runs and two hits.
Gyorko’s five hits ties the most hits in a game, last accomplished by Trent Ridgley on April 13, 2007 against Cincinnati. He also added three runs and three RBIs.
The Mountaineers (9-4) scored a season-high 21 runs on a season-high 19 hits and had one error, while St. Bonaventure (6-5) finished with three runs on 11 hits and committed two errors.
Freshman Dan DiBartolomeo collected three hits, scored four runs and drove in two runs, junior Justin Parks finished with two hits, scored two runs and two RBIs and junior Austin Markel posted two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Kyle Gorby, Randy Moley, Jesse Bosnik and Ryan Mosher led the St. Bonaventure with two hits each.
WVU took an early lead, scoring three in the third inning, giving the Mountaineers a 4-1 lead. Kuhn’s first home run of the game drove in two runs in the inning. The Bonnies answered in the fifth with two runs to cut the WVU lead to one.
The Mountaineers scored 10 runs in the fifth to blow the game open, extending their lead to 14-3. Markel had a two-RBI single to right center and Gyorko’s double down the right field line and single up the middle drove in three runs.
The Mountaineers added three more in the sixth and four more in the eighth to create the final 21-3 victory. In the sixth inning, DiBartolomeo doubled to center to drive in a run, and Kuhn had a two-run single. In the eighth, Belnome hit a three-run blast over the right field wall.
Senior left-hander Matt Yurish (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, pitching seven innings, giving up three runs on 11 hits, striking out six and walking three. St. Bonaventure’s Michael Proctor (1-1) dropped his first decision of the season, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up nine runs on 10 hits, and striking out two.
“Matt Yurish went out and pitched a great game, and Jarryd Summers came in and threw well for us,” comments head coach Greg Van Zant. “(Tyler) Kuhn set the tone for the team in the first inning, and it was a great win.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, March 14, when they face Iona in a four-game weekend series. First pitch is at 3 p.m., on Friday, followed by a 1 p.m., doubleheader on Saturday, March 15. The fourth game of the series will be on Sunday, March 16, beginning at 1 p.m.
