MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – St. Bonaventure used a five-run eighth inning to take a six-run lead and cruise to a 13-7 victory over West Virginia Tuesday evening at Hawley Field.
The Bonnies pounded out 13 runs on 16 hits to hand the Mountaineers their first loss in four games. St. Bonaventure broke open a tight 7-6 game in the top of the eighth inning, scoring five runs on two hits with the benefit of two errors.
Kevin Suminski led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jesse Bosnik. Suminski then advanced to third on a wild pitch by WVU reliever Chris Enourato and scored when Randy Moley reached second after Austin Markel dropped a routine fly ball in center field.
After Anthony Randich was intentionally walked to set up the double play, Brandon Salerno slapped a two-RBI double down the left field line. Jordan Yost came on in relief for Enourato and gave up two additional runs in the frame to give the Bonnies a 12-6 lead.
St. Bonaventure (6-4) got on the board in the top of the first when Suminski led off the game with a double and Moley hit a two-run homer over the Napa Auto Parts sign in left field to give SBU an early 2-0 lead.
West Virginia (8-4) responded in kind, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second when Justin Parks smacked and RBI single, scoring Enourato. Dan DiBartolomeo then grounded out to shortstop, scoring Joe Agreste from third base.
The teams traded runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the score at 4-4. St. Bonaventure scored a run in the fifth and then two runs off three hits in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead.
WVU scored two more in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-6 when Tobias Streich smacked an RBI double to left center scoring Markel from first. Streich then scored on an error by the shortstop when Bosnik was unable to stay in front of an Enourato screamer up the middle.
Starter Ross Fetterly (1-1) took the loss for West Virginia, giving up five earned runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three in 4.2 innings of work.
Matt Stewart (1-0) gets credit for the win, giving up two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one in 3.1 innings of relief work.
Moley and Salerno led St. Bonaventure with 3 RBIs each. Ten of 11 Bonnies batters had a hit. Parks led WVU with two hits and two RBIs.
