MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team took third place with a team aggregate score of 4626 at the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championship this weekend at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford, Miss.
After the Mountaineers shot a 2290 in smallbore on Saturday, WVU followed that up with a meet-high 2336 in air rifle Sunday.
“It was a good weekend,” Head Coach Jon Hammond. “We bounced back really well today to win air rifle and that was a great result for us. Hopefully, that sets us up well for the NCAAs depending on qualification.”
Army took home the conference title with a team aggregate score of 4651, while Kentucky came in second at 4633.
Brandi Eskew led the Mountaineers in the air rifle, shooting a 587 total in six strings. Eskew shot 99s in the first and third strings. Andrew Lamson followed with a 586, while Lafe Kunkel shot 582 and Tom Santelli totaled 581.
Individually, Lamson placed fourth in the air rifle finals at 687.0, while Eskew placed seventh in the air rifle finals, totaling a 685.9 score. Eskew also placed eighth in the smallbore finals at 673.7 on Saturday.
West Virginia will now wait to find out if they qualify for the NCAA Championships on March 15-16, later this week.
