Swimming: Mountaineers Have Record-Setting Day

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had a record-setting day to cap the BIG EAST Championships at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
The women’s team finished the meet in third place with 447 points, while the men’s team finished fourth with 398.5 points.
To start off the day, junior Lindsey Largo dominated the 1650 free event with a first-place finish and school-record time of 16:25.44.
Next up for the women, sophomore Morgan Callaway capped off one of the most prolific BIG EAST performances with a first-place finish in the 200 back in a school record time of 1:57.95.
Sophomore Kayla Andrews also had a stand out day with a first-place showing in the 100 free. Andrews posted time of 48.33, which was a meet and school record. It gives her an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Also placing in the 100 free were sophomores Shaunna Purtell and Stephanie Shupe. Purtell came in seventh (51.47), while Purtell finished in 11th (51.90).
In the 200 breast, sophomore Kitti Veisz posted a seventh-place finish with a NCAA ‘B’ time of 2:18.11, while junior Taylor Stallings came in 11th in the 200 fly (2:04.28).
On the men’s side, sophomore Justin Galbreath started the day with a third-place finish in the 1650 free with a NCAA ‘B’ time of 15:32.94. Junior Michael Walker and sophomore Tim Field followed, capturing first and second in the 200 back. Walker was first with a time of 1:47. 24, while Field was second with a time of 1:48.18.
Senior Nick Delic continued to contribute as he posted a fifth-place finish in the 100 free (44.87), while junior Payton Brooks finished in ninth (45.48).
Setting another meet and school record, senior Kevin Donohue captured his second automatic bid into the NCAA Championships with a first-placing showing in the 200 breast (1:55.78).
The Mountaineers once again showed their strength in the 400 free relay with a second-place finish on the women’s side and a third-place showing on the men’s.
WVU now must wait to see which swimmers qualified for NCAAs. The women’s championship will be held March 20-22, while the men’s will follow a week later.
