MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia soccer player Pat Carroll scored his first goal in a D.C. United jersey while the team was in Bradenton, Fla. for the squad’s winter training. D.C. United scrimmaged the Kansas City Wizards to a 1-1 draw.
Carroll scored three minutes before the end of the match after making a long run up the right side. Teammate Ardalan Attar served Carroll the ball who then shot a bullet from 25 yards out.
Carroll closed his career as a Mountaineer having played 83 matches and recording one goal during his senior campaign. Carroll was named an ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic All-American on Nov. 19, and was just the second Mountaineer in men’s soccer history to do so.
Carroll and fellow WVU teammate, Dan Stratford, are training with D.C. United during their winter session. Stratford was drafted with the 10th pick in the second round, 24th overall, of the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft on Jan. 25, while Carroll is a free agent vying for a spot on the roster. The team will travel to California and then to Jamaica to train before D.C. United’s season starts on March 12.
WVU closed the 2007 season with a record of 14-6-2, advanced to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST tournament and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. The Mountaineers were ranked No. 13 in the final NSCAA/adidas poll.
