MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnast Erica Watson earned her first career East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week honor today for her performance in WVU’s upset of No. 19 North Carolina on Feb. 15.
Watson scored a career-high 39.325 points to win the all-around against the Tar Heels. The Levittown, Pa., native also tied for first on bars with a career-high 9.9 mark, tied for second on floor (9.825) and notched career-high 9.8 on beam.
West Virginia freshman Amy Bieski was also named the EAGL Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. The Nanticoke, Pa., native won the floor exercise with a 9.875, while also vaulting a career-high 9.825 for fourth place. Bieski also received a 9.7 for her performance on bars.
The Mountaineers moved back into the Top 25 at No. 23 in the GymInfo poll. It’s the first time since the preseason poll that WVU has been ranked. At this point in the season, the rankings are now determined by a regional qualifying score (RQS). West Virginia’s RQS got a boost with the 195.275 score against UNC and currently is 193.155. The Mountaineers rank second in the EAGL behind NC State (194.335 RQS).
The Mountaineers (6-7, 3-0 EAGL) next face Rutgers, Bridgeport, Rhode Island and Ursinus in a five-team meet on Feb. 23, in Piscataway, N.J.
