MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University distance runners Kaylyn Christopher and Clara Grandt competed at the prestigious USA Cross Country Championships at Mission Bay Park in San Diego this weekend.
Christopher, a true freshman from Kingwood, W.Va., placed 16th in the junior women’s six kilometer run with a time of 22:21. Jordan Hasay took first in the race at 20:32.
Grandt, a sophomore from West Union, W.Va., competed in the women’s eight kilometer run and placed 32nd in 29:06. Shalane Flannigan won that race by crossing the line in 25:26.
“Obviously, it’s very difficult to train for a cross country race this time of year, but both girls had really strong performances,” Head Coach Sean Cleary says.
The 2008 USA Cross Country Championships will be televised in association with the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 24, from 5-7 p.m. on ESPN2.
The WVU track team was idle this week and is currently training for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships this weekend, Feb. 23-24, at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York City.
