MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 11 West Virginia University women’s basketball team battles DePaul on "Think Pink" day Saturday, Feb. 16, at the WVU Coliseum at 2 p.m. West Virginia is attempting to break the record for attendance to raise awareness for breast cancer.
With double-figure wins in 2006 and 2007, the Mountaineers hold a 2-1 series lead all-time against the Blue Demons. DePaul’s lone victory in the series came in 1981.
West Virginia (20-3, 9-1) enters the game winners of 16 straight at home, including a school record 12 straight against BIG EAST foes. Senior center Olayinka Sanni has posted double-figures in 20 of 23 games this season, while senior two-guard LaQuita Owens is averaging 18.4 points in her last five games. Owens and Sanni, along with seniors Chakhia Cole and Meg Bulger, have all scored 1,000 career points, making WVU just the 12th school to feature four 1,000 point scorers on the same team.
DePaul (16-7, 5-5) comes to Morgantown losing three of its last four games. The Blue Demons are led by senior guard Allie Quigley, who averages 18.9 points per game. Backcourt teammate sophomore Dierdre Naughton averages 15.7 points per game and shoots 38.9 percent from 3-point range, while inside 6-foot-3 junior forward Natasha Williams scores 11.5 points a game. Williams also has 41 blocks in 23 games.
The Mountaineers will be participating in the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association’s “Think Pink” initiative to raise breast cancer awareness. Fans attending the contest are encouraged to wear pink. WVU is partnering with the Mary Babb Randolph Breast Cancer Center for this initiative and will be honoring Betty Puskar at halftime of the contest. Fans who are breast cancer survivors or are battling the disease will also be recognized during halftime.
The Dominion Post will be including two free tickets to the contest in every edition of today’s paper. The Dominion Post will be donating 25 cents for every ticket redeemed to the Mary Babb Randolph Breast Cancer Center.
West Virginia is also taking part in the NCAA’s “Pack the House” initiative and is attempting to break the WVU Coliseum women’s basketball attendance record.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day will also be held with the first 100 girls under the age of 13 receiving a free poster from that organization.
All concessions for the game, Coca-Cola products, hot dogs and popcorn, will be sold for just $1.
It is also Dairy Mart Dollar Day. Stop by your local Dairy Mart and pick up a $1 coupon, which can be redeemed at the gate for a $1 general admission ticket.
