Baseball: WVU To Hold First Practice

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- The West Virginia University baseball team opens its 2008 season, today, as the team will hold its first practice at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility.
February 1, is the first day of practice for all Division I schools this season, while February 22, will be the first day DI teams are allowed to compete in intercollegiate games. Both dates are new this season and were set by the NCAA.
The Mountaineers return 18 players to their roster, including 11 lettermen. The squad is led by four seniors and six juniors and includes 18 freshmen. This year’s roster will comprise the youngest team ever under Head Coach Greg Van Zant’s, who enters his 14th season.
“We are anxious to start practice this evening,” comments Van Zant. “We have a lot of work to do between now and February 22.”
The 2008 season is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 22, when the squad travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face Akron, before competing at the annual Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Feb. 29-March 2. The team will host Duquesne in its home opener on March 4, at Hawley Field at 3 p.m.
