FRESNO, CALIF. – West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team led from wire-to-wire and held off a furious Fresno State rally in the final minutes to preserve a key 68-63 road win, Saturday evening at Save Mart Center.
Senior Takisha Granberry led all scorers with a game-high 20 points on 7-13 shooting, with nine rebounds and three steals, marking her second straight 20 point contest and fourth on the season. Granberry also posted her ninth consecutive game with at least two steals.
Sophomore Liz Repella tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds while senior Ashley Powell tied a season-high with 13 points
WVU (8-2) led 49-31 with 10:52 remaining in the contest, before Fresno State (7-4) went on a 32-19 run to end the game, repeatedly fouling the Mountaineers, trying to take advantage of WVU’s poor second half free throw shooting. West Virginia shot 11-25 from the charity stripe in the second half.
The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Bulldogs 50-37, including 20 offensive rebounds, their fifth 20-plus offensive rebounding game of the year, and forced 18 Fresno State turnovers in the contest.
West Virginia led 31-23 at the half.
WVU’s defense limited Fresno State to 23 first half points, the seventh Mountaineer opponent that had been held to 25 points or less in the first half this season.
Powell scored WVU’s first six points and the Mountaineers did not trail in the first half building an 11-point lead three times in the first half.
WVU extended its halftime lead to 12 with 15:40 left in the game after Liz Repella hit her first 3-pointer of the game at 19:01 and Granberry had a running jumper at the 16:18 mark. The Mountaineers extended its lead to 47-31 with 11:50 left in the contest on consecutive layups from freshman center Natalie Burton.
The victory was Coach Mike Carey’s 140th as the Mountaineers' front man.
West Virginia concludes its two-game West Coast road trip, Monday, Dec. 22, at Santa Clara at 8 p.m. The Broncos and Mountaineers will be meeting for the first time.
