MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer player Greer Barnes was named a Soccer America MVP today. Barnes, a senior defender, was one of 11 players named to the College Women's MVP Second Team, its version of an All-America team.
The All-America nod is the second of this postseason for Barnes, named an NSCAA/adidas Third Team All-American last week. The Rye, N.Y., native is a two-time First Team All-BIG EAST defender, along with a Second Team All-BIG EAST nod in 2006.
Barnes wreaked havoc on opposing defenses in 2008, getting forward in the attack to total 34 shots and five points. She appeared in 82 career matches for the Mountaineers at both midfield and defender.
The Soccer America MVP program was introduced in 1976 to honor the players who had the biggest impact on their team's success regardless of position. Beginning in 2007, Soccer America selected first and second teams.
Barnes is the third Mountaineer in the program’s 13-year history to be named a Soccer America MVP. Midfielder Amanda Cicchini was a First Team selection in 2007 and forward Chrissie Abbott was honored in 2002.
The Mountaineers closed out the 2008 season with a 14-3-6 record, tying the school record for fewest losses in a season. West Virginia advanced to its ninth straight NCAA tournament, and sixth trip to the NCAA Round of 32.
