MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia seniors, punter Pat McAfee and offensive lineman Ryan Stanchek, were named All-Americans today.
McAfee was named a third team All-American by both the Associated Press and Phil Steele’s Football Magazine. Last week, he was named a second team All-American selection by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
This season, McAfee was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award and a finalist for the Ray Guy Award. He is ranked No. 6 nationally in punting average with a 44.7 yard per kick average, has placed 23 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and had 19 that were 50 yards or longer.
He set the WVU all-time kick scoring and overall scoring records this season, scoring 377 points for his career. He also is the No. 1 leader in the BIG EAST for career extra points made with 205.
Stanchek was named a fourth-team All-American by Phil Steele’s Football Magazine after being named a second team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation last week. He also was named to five different All-American teams last year as a junior.
Stanchek has started 46 games during his Mountaineer career, second most in the school’s history. The offensive line has paved the way for West Virginia to lead the BIG EAST in rushing offense all four years of his career. WVU is ranked No. 12 nationally in rushing offense this season and No. 15 in fewest sacks allowed. He also is credited with 102 knockdowns for the season.
West Virginia finished with an 8-4 record and tied for second place in the BIG EAST Conference. The Mountaineers will play North Carolina (8-4) in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 27, in Charlotte, N.C., at Bank of America Stadium.
