CINCINNATI, Ohio – Both the West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recorded wins this afternoon at Cincinnati.
The men defeated the Bearcats by a score of 161-137, while the women won 147.50-142.50.
Overall, there were 30 individual Mountaineers who helped to record points and the women overcame the loss of possible points with no divers in the meet. West Virginia won three of the meet’s four relays and finished with 17 first-place finishes.
“It was a real big win, especially for the women’s team to come together and win a meet without diving points,” Coach Vic Riggs says. “As a whole, both teams competed really well in an exciting meet.”
The men began the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay (3:27.53). Michael Walker, George Farquhar, Pablo Marmolejo and Brad Eichenseer made up the winning team. The foursome of Tim Field, Jack Greenhalgh, Martin Vanis and Payton Brooks finished with a third-place finish (3:33.38).
“Pablo and Walker had great individual meets,” Riggs says. “We also got some good swims from Martin and Camp.”
In the men’s 100 back, Marmolejo (51.78), Walker (53.14) and Field (53.31) placed first, second and third, respectively, while Vanis had his first individual victory as a Mountaineer in the 200 fly (1:53.88).
In the 200 breast, the trend of the day continued with Farquhar finishing first (2:08.28), with Marmolejo in second (2:11.02) and Greenhalgh in third (2:12.30).
Marmolejo then took the 100 fly (49.09) and had fellow Mountaineers Brandon Carr finish third (53.16) and Eichenseer (53.60) finish fourth.
Walker had one individual first-place finish on the day in the 400 IM (3:58.89). Justin Galbreath finished fourth (4:14.29) in the event and Vanis finished fifth (4:16.45). Galbreath finished in third (16:16.99) earlier in the afternoon in the 1650 free.
In the 1650 free, Ian Stavros finished fourth (16:55.80) with Eric Johnson coming in fifth (17:02.15). Johnson also took fifth (2:00.83) in the 200 back with both Field and Jeff Byrd finishing second (1:52.54) and third (1:57.22) respectively. Johnson had his third fifth-place finish of the day in the 500 free (4:56.26).
Taylor Camp finished third (4:49.56) in the 500 free and second (1:43.12) in the 200 free, as well as helping the 800 free relay team made up of Field, Camp, Vanis and Jared Varner finish second (7:07.19).
The male divers, Matt O’Neill (278.78) and Brandon Robinson (258.98), took first and second in the 1-meter dive.
The women also started the meet off with a win in the 400 medley relay (3:51.13). The Mountaineers recorded great splits from all four competitors, Stephanie Shupe, Morgan Callaway, Kayla Andrews and Isabel Perez.
The duo of Andrews and Callaway finished neck and neck in the 100 back with Andrews coming in first (57.84) and Callaway finishing only a hundredth of a second (57.85) behind her teammate.
Andrews also finished first (50.44) in the 100 free, an event she has yet to not win this season. Callaway finished in first (2:06.97) the following event in the 200 back and also finished first (5:01.64) in the 500 free with Shaunna Purtell placing second (5:10.78).
Lindsey Largo took a first-place finish (17:14.15) in the 1650 free. The next closet opponent finished 45 seconds later.
Shupe had a great overall day and was a big part in the Mountaineers earning the victory with her relay legs and finishing first (2:09.17) in the 200 fly. Shupe also placed third (56.88) in the 100 fly behind the second place (56.09) finisher, Andrews.
“I think the standout swims were Shupe in her 200 fly and her leg in the 800 free relay,” Riggs says. “We had to move some girls around to score some points that we needed.”
Perez and Jaryn Studer took the field in the 200 breast with Perez coming in first (2:23.51) and Studer finishing second (2:25.08).
Studer, who has continually been improving for West Virginia, finished first (4:33.40) in the 400 IM, while Largo finishing second (4:35.25) and Perez came in third (4:37.15).
“Jaryn has continually gotten better throughout the season,” Riggs says. “She had a really good day today, especially in the 400 IM.”
Finishing off the events for the women, a squad made up of Maritza Paredes, Shupe, Purtell and Largo came in first (7:44.90) in the 800 free relay.
The Mountaineers will now have a break in the season to prepare for the Georgia Invitational which will take place Dec. 5-7. Joining the Mountaineers in Athens, Ga., will be Georgia, California, Clemson, Denver and Harvard.
