Football: Slavonic, Stanchek Nab Academic Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University seniors Doug Slavonic and Ryan Stanchek, were named as first-team members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America announced today by the organization.
They will now be forwarded to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The All-America team will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Slavonic, a defensive lineman from Pittsburgh, graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in finance with a 3.70 grade point average. He is currently working on a master’s degree in business administration. He has been a regular on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the BIG EAST Academic All-Star team and the BIG EAST Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Slavonic has played in all eight games this year and started the last five. He has registered 18 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup. He is part of a Mountaineer defense that is currently No. 10 nationally in scoring defense, No. 20 in turnover margin and No. 32 in total defense.
Stanchek, an offensive lineman, was selected to the all-district team for the second-straight year. The Cincinnati native graduated in May with a 3.40 in athletic coaching education and is currently working on a master’s degree in special education. He also has been a regular on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the BIG EAST Academic All-Star team and the BIG EAST Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Stanchek leads the Mountaineers with 41-consecutive starts and ranks among the top players in the nation in starts. The offensive lineman was named to several All-American teams last year, including the Football Writers, Associated Press and Walter Camp Football Foundation. He is part of an offensive line which ranks among the Top 10 nationally in fewest sacks allowed for the past few years and is ranked among the Top 10 in rushing offense.
West Virginia (6-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) welcomes Cincinnati (6-2, 2-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday, November 8, for a BIG EAST Conference contest at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium (60,000) at 7 p.m.
