ORONO, MAINE – Senior Takisha Granberry’s career-high 30 points guided the West Virginia University women’s basketball team (4-1) past New Jersey Tech (0-4), 76-42, in opening round action of the Dead River Company Classic Friday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
New Jersey Tech took its only lead of the game after a Jessica Gerald 3-pointer to open the contest. WVU then went on a 24-0 run to take a commanding lead it would not relinquish before Gerald hit the back end of two free throws at the 9:24 mark to make it 24-4. Granberry fueled the run with 14 points including four 3-pointers in the opening six and half minutes of play. The Mountaineers went on to lead at halftime 33-14 as it hit seven of its 14 3-point attempts. WVU used an 11-4 run to start the second half and led by as many as 36 late in the contest.
Granberry was lights out in the contest, connecting on eight of her nine 3-point attempts, and was 10-15 from the field with 10 rebounds. She set a school record for single game 3-point field goal percentage based on a minimum of seven attempts (88.9%), breaking Judy Eaton’s and Christie Lambert’s former record of 750% (6-8), set in 1988 and 1995, respectively. The contest also marked her second straight double-double in as many games.
Granberry’s 30-point performance marked the first 30-point game by a Mountaineer since LaQuita Owens had 30 in a 76-71 overtime win at Louisville in 2007. Granberry’s eight 3-pointers were the most since Meg Bulger also had eight against Cleveland State in an 83-39 victory at the Coliseum in 2005. Granberry is also the first Mountaineer to tally 30 points and 10 rebounds in a game since Bulger did so with 31 points and 10 caroms in WVU’s 80-75 overtime victory at Kentucky in the 2005 postseason WNIT semifinals.
Sophomore guard Liz Repella tallied her third consecutive double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, becoming the first Mountaineer to do so since Olayinka Sanni had three straight last year in January. Junior college transfer Vanessa House was a perfect 5-5 from the field including 4-4 from 3-point range for 14 points, coming off the bench, while senior point guard Ashley Powell tallied a season-high 10 assists in the contest.
As a team, West Virginia shot 56.5% from 3-point range, connecting on 13 of 23 attempts, and was 45.9% (28-61) from the field for the contest. The 13 made 3-pointers tied for the second-most in school history with last year’s team that also connected on 13 in the win at Cincinnati. WVU also held the Highlanders to just 28.0% (14-50) shooting from the field.
West Virginia out-rebounded the Highlanders 45-29 and scored 17 points off the 24 NJIT turnovers. WVU’s bench also outscored the Highlanders 22-11.
The Mountaineers take on the winner of Brown vs. Maine, tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at Alfond Arena.
