CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Alex Ruoff scored 25 points to lead West Virginia to a 76-42 victory over Delaware State Tuesday night in the second game of the Los Vegas Invitational played at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W.Va.
The Mountaineers face Iowa Saturday night in Las Vegas at 9 pm in a game to be televised statewide on the Big East Television Network. The championship game will be played on Sunday night on ESPN2.
Twenty two of Ruoff’s 25 points came in the first half as the Mountaineers rolled up a 50-16 advantage. Ruoff made six of his game-high seven 3s in the first half and finished 7 of 12 from behind the 3-point arc.
"We didn't do a good job getting him shots in the second half," WVU coach Bob Huggins said. "When they chase him like that, somebody else is always open. And we either didn't find the guy who was open or didn't make the shots."
Da’Sean Butler contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, Kevin Jones scored 11 and Truck Bryant added 10. Bryant had reached double figures in all three games this season.
West Virginia (3-0) shot 47.1 percent for the game after making 16 of 28 first-half field goals for 57.1 percent. WVU also shot a season-high 78.3 percent from the free throw line (18 of 23).
Frisco Sandidge led Delaware State with 14 points. Arturo DuBoise added 13. The Hornets committed 23 turnovers.
Oddly, Delaware State (1-6) has scored 42 points in each of its last four games against Dayton, Ohio State, Kentucky and West Virginia.
An announced crowd of 10,434 showed up for the game.
