PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team was defeated for just the second time this season, falling 1-0 at Rutgers Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. It was the first loss for the Mountaineers since a 2-1 double overtime defeat versus Santa Clara on Aug. 29.
Rutgers, who took only four shots, found the back of the net on a goal in transition after Erica Henderson was taken down on the offensive end. Rutgers took the ball the other way with Kristen Edmonds dumping the ball off to her right to Caycie Gusman who was left one-on-one with WVU goalkeeper Kerri Butler. Gusman’s shot was sent into lower right corner at 69:36 for the game-winner.
“We played well today but couldn’t come up with a goal,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Give Rutgers credit for taking advantage of our mistake.”
West Virginia, which has out-shot its opponent in every game this season, took six more shots than the Scarlet Knights. Forwards Deana Everrett and Megan Mischler led the Mountaineers with three shots a piece.
WVU’s best scoring opportunity came four minutes into second half on Mischler’s shot that was deflected wide by Rutgers goalkeeper Erin Guthrie. Freshman Blake Miller sent a ball over the top to Mischler who turned on a defender for the shot and save.
In the 59th minute, WVU’s Butler made a nice punch save over the crossbar on a cross-turned-shot by midfielder Kristie Lang. Butler recorded one save in 90 minutes of play.
West Virginia dominated the opening 45 minutes, controlling possession and taking six shots, including two on goal.
Mischler took the first two shots of the match in back-to-back attempts in the seventh minute.
The Mountaineers’ best scoring chance of the first half came on a WVU corner kick 14 minutes in. Everrett volleyed a hard shot in traffic just wide right of the goal.
Three minutes prior to that Everrett also had an opportunity when she took a shot into the lower left corner of the net that was saved by Guthrie.
Both teams took four corner kicks and Rutgers had 17 fouls, while West Virginia had 10 fouls called against them.
West Virginia is now 8-4-1 all-time against Rutgers and 2-2-1 when the game is on the road.
West Virginia moves to 7-2-4 (2-1-2) on the year while Rutgers goes to 9-3-1 (4-1-0).
The Mountaineers return to Morgantown for a four-match homestand starting with Providence on Friday, Oct. 10, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
