SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Ninth-ranked West Virginia recorded 22 shots but could not find the back of the net more than once, playing to a 1-1 double overtime draw with Seton Hall Friday night at Owens T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.
WVU, playing in its fifth overtime match of the season, fired off six shots in the final eight minutes of regulation that nearly ended the tie. The Mountaineers added six more shots in the two overtime periods, out-shooting the Pirates 22-7 on the night.
West Virginia had two quality scoring chances in the first overtime. Senior Deana Everrett took a hard shot inside the box that was deflected away by SHU goalkeeper Elizabeth Bond. A scramble for the ball ensued with senior Lisa DuCote coming out and firing a second shot at Bond who held on for the save.
The game was stopped for five minutes in the second overtime as a yellow card was issued and later rescinded. With 4:47 to play, Everrett raced Bond to a ball heading for the end line. Everrett was taken out by Bond who jumped on the ball at the edge of the box, bringing out the yellow. The play was then ruled a goal kick by the side referee and the card was taken back with both coaches questioning the play.
The Mountaineers took the momentum following the delay and attempted all four shots in the final overtime session. The WVU defense allowed only one shot in the final 33 minutes.
West Virginia took an early 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a goal from freshman Blake Miller. Sophomore Megan Mischler served a ball into the middle where a Seton Hall defender could not clear it, resulting in Miller stealing the ball. The St. Louis, Mo., native took two dribbles and fired a hard shot inside the top right corner for her fourth goal of the season.
Seton Hall countered three minutes later with a goal at 21:55 from midfielder Kaitlyn Rogers. Midfielder Katie Andreski served a ball from left to right, finding Rogers who was left open at the top of the box. Rogers’ shot was sent low and into the corner of the net for game-tying score.
The goal allowed by the Mountaineer defense was the first in the last 446 minutes of play.
Mountaineer goalkeeper Kerri Butler came up with a huge save in the 14th minute on a shot by Pirate forward Wiebke Balcke. Balcke was left 1-on-1 with Butler who charged off her line, making a sliding save on the shot.
Butler finished with one save in 110 minutes between the posts.
Everrett led all players with eight shots while Mischler, DuCote and junior Carolyn Blank each attempted three shots. West Virginia moves to 7-1-4 (2-0-2) on the year while Seton Hall goes to 4-5-2 (0-3-1).
The Mountaineers complete their two-game BIG EAST road trip at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Rutgers.
