MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A pair of West Virginia University women’s soccer players were honored for their play over the weekend as the Mountaineers won their third-straight BIG EAST American Division title.
Sophomore Kerri Butler was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week while senior Greer Barnes was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
Butler picked up her first weekly award of the season, named the lone goalkeeper on the 11-player TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week. Butler led the West Virginia defense to back-to-back shutouts in conference play – its third back-to-back effort against BIG EAST teams this year.
WVU’s wins at Marquette and USF were the 11th and 12th shutouts of the season – one shy of tying the all-time record. The Fredericksburg, Va., native logged all 180 minutes over the weekend. She recorded five saves, facing 13 shots, while improving her goals-against average to 0.42 in 18 games between the posts.
The weekly conference honor is the third of the season for Barnes, having won the honor previously on Sept. 8 and Sept. 22. The outside back led the Mountaineer defense in holding two conference foes to a combined five shots on-goal in an undefeated weekend.
The Rye, N.Y., native logged all 180 minutes of action in two shutouts. West Virginia’s defense held USF to no corner kick attempts – the second time this season for WVU (vs. Connecticut, Oct. 12). Barnes was also a threat offensively, making runs forward and registering two shots.
After earning a first round bye in this year’s BIG EAST tournament, the Mountaineers await the winner of Pitt (No. 5 seed-American) and Louisville (No. 4 seed-National). West Virginia will play host to the BIG EAST quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2.
