MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team travels to BIG EAST opponent Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 25, for the Mountaineers’ final regular-season league road contest of the season. Kickoff at North Kehoe field is scheduled for noon.
WVU (4-6-5, 2-2-4 BIG EAST) played No. 6 Maryland earlier in the week, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Terps on Oct. 21. Maryland’s Jeremy Hall sent a header to the far post on a corner kick from Graham Zusi in the 36th minute. Sophomore Paul Paradise led the team with three shots, while sophomore goalkeeper Zach Johnson made five saves in the loss.
Offensively, the Mountaineers have received goals from five different players. Paradise and freshmen Alex Silva and Adam Mills have two goals apiece in 2008. Paradise also leads the team with three assists.
WVU’s Johnson, who has been a stalwart in goal for the Mountaineers, owns a 0.56 goals-against average, allowing just nine goals in 15 contests. The Lumberton, N.J., native leads the league in saves (75), saves per game (5.00), and is third in save percentage (.893). To add to his numbers, Johnson also owns seven shutouts this season.
Georgetown (8-3-3, 3-2-3 BE), who will be playing its first game in a week, defeated Pitt on the road, 1-0, on Oct. 18. Senior Peter Grasso scored the lone goal of the game at the 5:32 mark, with junior Scott Larrabee earning an assist on the play. Georgetown sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Brutto made four saves en route to his seventh shutout of the season. The Hoyas out-shot the Panthers, 21-4.
Grasso leads the team with five goals and 17 shots on-goal. Larrabee, second on the team with seven points, has three assists. The Hoyas have received at least one goal from 11 different players this season.
The Hoyas are led by Head Coach Brian Wiese. In his third season with the program, Wiese owns a 21-25-4 record. Last year, the Hoyas posted a 7-11-1 overall record, going 5-5-1 in BIG EAST play, good enough for fifth in the Blue Division. The team returns eight starters from the 2007 squad.
WVU has won its last three meetings against Georgetown.
