Cross Country Remains No. 2 In Mid-Atlantic Region

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team has been ranked No. 2 in the Division I Women’s Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, released today by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations (USTFCCA).
The Mountaineers rank second behind No. 1 Princeton and ahead of No. 3 Villanova, No. 4 Georgetown and No. 5 Penn State. The Mid-Atlantic Region is one of nine divisions nationwide, with 15 teams ranked in each region. This is the fifth consecutive week that WVU has been ranked in the second slot.
WVU currently ranks No. 7 in the national poll by the USTFCCA and most recently finished first at the Penn State National Invitational. Four West Virginia cross country runners placed in the Top 10 to lead the Mountaineers to a first-place finish on Oct. 17, held in University Park, Pa. Junior Keri Bland finished second with a time of 20:11 followed by teammate Clara Grandt (20:17) who came in third out of 300 runners, representing 28 different schools. Freshman Ahna Lewis finished in eighth place (20:56) followed by sophomore Kaylyn Christopher who placed ninth (20:59), giving the Mountaineers its’ third first place finish in four meets.
Next up, the Mountaineers will race in the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31. The defending champions will travel to the Bronx, N.Y. for the race, which is being hosted by St. John’s.
