Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall to Pitt

The Panthers won the match 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-17).
Set one saw ties nine different times between the two teams after the Mountaineers jumped out to an early 3-5 lead. Tied up at 22, a block by senior middle blocker Lisa Hough and sophomore middle blocker Abby Norman fueled the Mountaineers to a 24-22 lead. Freshman outside hitter Kylie Armbruster ended the set with a kill for the win.
WVU battled with the Panthers in the third set after a kill from freshman middle blocker Abby Monson brought the Mountaineers back to within three. The Mountaineers would get within two of the Panthers after a kill from senior middle blocker Tammy Wolf, but despite their best efforts, still lost the set.
The Mountaineers started set four with a 2-0 run from a kill by Norman, followed by a service ace by freshman setter Kari Post. In a hard fought set, the Mountaineers saw three ties and three lead changes as they fell to the Panthers.
Post led the Mountaineers with 28 assists and 16 digs. Wolf, Armbruster and freshman outside hitter Michelle Kopecky all posted seven kills apiece.
As a team, the Mountaineers posted 54 digs, 37 assists and six total team blocks.
WVU continues action with a 2 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 19, against Duquesne at the A. J. Palumbo Center, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team (6-13, 0-7 BIG EAST) fell to BIG EAST rival Pitt (14-8, 6-1 BIG EAST) today at the Fitzgerald Field House, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
