MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Blue team won its third straight game against the Gold team, 6-5, in the final game of the 19th annual Gold-Blue World Series on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Hawley Field.
Freshman right-hander Dustin Galbraith earned the win after allowing only two runs on three hits in six innings pitched. The Sandston, Va., native also struck out seven while walking three.
Senior Justin Parks had a 2-for-4 effort with two RBIs to lead the Blue. His leadoff solo home run over the left field wall in the fourth inning created a 5-2 lead for the Blue that was nearly relinquished in the ninth inning.
Redshirt sophomore Grant Buckner contributed with a 1-for-3 effort, including a run-scoring single in the fourth. Joe Agreste and Tobias Streich each added an RBI.
Left-hander Jesse Darby earned the save for the Blue squad after giving up three runs on four hits in three innings pitched. He totaled five strikeouts and gave up just one walk.
Freshman Jonathan Jones took the loss for the Gold, giving up six runs, with only two of them earned, on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. Reliever Justin Ellis filled in nicely for Jones, throwing 4 2/3 innings and giving up no runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
Redshirt sophomore Mark Dvoroznak started the Gold off with a double in the first inning, then scored on an error to give his squad an early 1-0 lead. A botched pickoff attempt at first base allowing a hustling Jedd Gyorko to score as well, creating a 2-0 advantage.
The Blue responded in the bottom half after Agreste’s RBI sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2. Streich followed with a run-scoring single, and Parks added an RBI sacrifice fly in the second inning to extend the Blue’s advantage to 4-2.
A game dominated by pitching from both squads ensued until the top of the ninth. Down 6-3, the Gold received a boost from pinch-hitter Andrew Scherer when he laced an RBI double down the left field line. With two outs remaining, Ellis and Gyorko added run-scoring singles to trim the deficit to 6-5, but Dan DiBartolomeo struck out looking to end the game.
