HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams excelled by winning four of five dual meets on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Marshall.
The men’s squad defeated Xavier, 235-43 and East Carolina, 151-137 in dual meet action, while the women defeated Marshall, 171-124 and Xavier, 192-46. However, the women fell to ECU, 171-119.
“I think that everybody swam very well today,” Head Coach Vic Riggs said. “(Michael) Walker and Pablo (Marmolejo) had important swims in the 200 IM, along with the 200 medley relay.”
The men had ten first-place finishes including impressive showings by seniors Walker and Marmolejo, George Farquhar, Tim Field, Matt O’Neill and Brandon Robinson.
Farquhar won the 100 breast (58.31), while Walker and Field finished first (52.19) and second (52.79) in the 100 back. Walker also finished first in the 200 breast (2:05.08) and finished second behind teammate Marmolejo in the 200 IM (1:54.22).
Marmolejo placed first in the 100 fly (50.14) and the 200 fly (1:51.81) and Field finished at the top in the 200 back (1:53.91) with newcomer Taylor Camp finishing second (1:55.11).
The 200 medley relay, made up of Payton Brooks, Farquhar, Marmolejo and Walker finished first (1:35.52) as well.
The diving duo of O’Neill and Robinson helped the Mountaineer point total immensely with Robinson placing first (251.77) in the 1-meter dive while O’Neill finished second (205.35). In the 3-meter dive O’Neill finished first (234.60), while Robinson came in second (232.20).
The women had an exceptional showing today from Kayla Andrews who finished first in the 50 free (23.58), 100 free (50.10) and 100 back (56.91). Andrews was also a member of the first place (3:28.42) 400 free relay along with Stephanie Shupe, Shaunna Purtell and Morgan Callaway.
“Kayla’s 50.10 in the 100 free was the swim of the meet on both the men’s and women’s side,” Riggs said. “She also had a really nice 50 free and 100 back and did what we asked her to do.”
Senior Lindsey Largo won both of her distance swims in the 500 free (4:59.01) and the 1000 free (10:09.66). Largo also finished second in the 200 fly (2:06.28).
“Morgan (Callaway) had a real good day along with (Lindsey) Largo and Isabel Perez,” Riggs said. “Everybody swam very well today.”
Both Callaway and Perez were members of the 200 medley relay that came in first (1:47.40) and were accompanied by Shupe and Sarah Kosmak in that event.
Callaway also placed first in the 200 free (1:51.77) and the 200 back (2:03.09), while Perez finished second in the 100 breast (1:06.84).
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 5 p.m. The meet will be the first of two home meets this season and will be held in the WVU Natatorium.
