MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University midfielder Andy Wright has signed a professional contract with the Scunthorpe United Football Club of the English Championship in his native country of England. The English Championship is the second highest level of soccer in England, as the Premiership is the first.
Wright recently completed one of the finest careers by a midfielder in school history. The senior netted six goals and six assists for 18 points in 2007, taking home BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year honors. The All-America honor is the third for Wright, also named a second team All-American by CollegeSoccerNews.com and a third team All-American by the NSCAA. Wright was named a Soccer America MVP on Dec. 21 and was one of 22 players named to the College Men's MVP teams, its version of an All-America team, to close his Mountaineer career.
The Liverpool, England, native finished his career at WVU with 18 goals, 17 assists, and 53 points in 83 matches played for WVU. The two-time all-BIG EAST player was also an NSCAA all-Northeast region honoree as a senior.
Wright is the third men’s soccer All-American in the last two seasons, joining Nick Noble (goalkeeper) and Jarrod Smith (forward) from a year ago.
