MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia looks to remain near the top of the Big East Conference standings when it takes on St. John’s today in Jamaica, N.Y.
The No. 14-rated Mountaineers are in fourth place in league standings with a 3-1 record sitting behind Connecticut, Rutgers and Pitt with undefeated Big East marks. West Virginia’s lone loss in conference play came at Connecticut on Jan. 9.
The Mountaineers beat Notre Dame and Marquette at home after opening on the road with a win at USF on Jan. 5. Another road victory against a tough St. John’s team today won’t be easy.
St. John’s is 10-6, 1-2, and shows victories over North Carolina State and South Florida so far this year. The Red Storm’s two conference losses have come against Rutgers and DePaul – both on the road.
In its last loss against DePaul on Jan. 15, St. John’s led at halftime 44-42 before falling 91-80 in overtime. Sophomore guard Kelly McManmon scored a career-high 19 points off the bench and freshman guard Lindsay Sky added 17 points.
Another Red Storm guard, Monique McLean, has three 20-point games this year and shows six double-doubles for her career.
West Virginia is coming off a tough, 68-63 victory over Marquette on Wednesday night to boost its overall record to 13-3. The Mountaineers got 21 points and 16 rebounds from senior center Olayinka Sanni in the victory. Three others scored double figures including LaQuita Owens, who added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Mountaineers have captured 14 of 18 all-time meetings against St. John’s including winning five of their last six regular season meetings against the Red Storm. The last win for St. John’s against West Virginia came on Jan. 29, 2006 when it held off the Mountaineers 74-69 in a game played at Madison Square Garden.
