COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team posted a season-high score to down Maryland 193.050-192.550 Friday night at the Comcast Pavilion.
The Mountaineers’ 193.050 points topped the previous season-best mark of 192.125 at the Cancun Classic on Jan. 4.
With the score tied at 144.375 heading into the final rotation, West Virginia scored a season-high 48.675 points on beam, while the Terps only scored 48.175 points on floor. Kiersten Spoerke led the Mountaineers with a 9.8 on beam to take the individual title. Shelly Purkat and Chelsi Tabor also turned in solid routines to score a 9.75 and 9.775, respectively.
WVU (2-4) produced its top floor routines during the meet’s third rotation to score 48.700 points. The Mountaineers score built with each of its six routines. Seniors Katie McGregor and Margaret Ann Moore started the session off with 9.6s before Spoerke hit for a 9.675. Junior Mehgan Morris and Purkat each followed with a 9.8, setting up Amy Bieski’s team-best 9.825 which placed first. WVU’s push in the third rotation brought the score to a tie at 144.375 points apiece, after Maryland tallied 47.900 points on beam.
West Virginia’s second rotation saw the Mountaineers post its best vault score of the season at 48.575 points. Bieski registered her third consecutive 9.8 vault while teammates Jaime Gold and Tabor hit for 9.75s, respectively. Maryland countered with 48.375 points on bars to hold a 96.475-95.675 lead through the first half of the meet.
On the first rotation, Morris scored the team-high on bars for the third consecutive meet with a 9.75. McGregor and Bieski each hit for 9.675s as WVU totaled 47.100 points on its first event.
Maryland (0-2) opened the meet on vault and scored 48.100 points. The Terps were led by Brandi George’s 9.8 and Abigail Adams’ 9.7. With the 9.8 score, George tied Bieski for first place on vault.
Morris took second in the all-around with 38.75 points behind George’s 38.925 of Maryland.
The Mountaineers next compete in the team’s home opener against Oklahoma, George Washington and William & Mary on Jan. 27, at 1 p.m., in the WVU Coliseum.
