MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team set a new school record with a team score of 4626, but it was not enough as the Mountaineers fell to NCAA defending national champions, Alaska-Fairbanks today, 4626-4653, at the WVU rifle range. WVU now holds a 4-3 record on the season.
The previous team record of 4603 was set at Akron on Jan. 21, 2006.
Freshman Brandi Eskew shot a combined score of 1170 which broke the previous score of 1162 shot by Brian Launer on Feb. 4, 2006. The Petersburg, W.Va. native also broke the WVU record for smallbore, shooting a 585, to break Lafe Kunkel’s record of 584 set against Army on Oct. 23, 2004.
Senior Natasha Dinsmore shot a personal best of 567 in smallbore.
“It was a good performance and we know we can shoot better still,” comments Head Coach Jon Hammond. “It’s disappointing not to get a win, but we only lost by 27 points to the defending National Champions. We know what we have to work on and we will continue to make strides.
Next up, WVU will travel to Ohio to take on Akron on Sunday, Jan. 20.
