MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rowing Head Coach Jimmy King has announced the 2008 spring schedule.
This year the Mountaineers will begin the season with a trip to Dayton, Ohio, for a race against Dayton and Duquesne, on Saturday, Apr. 5.
“Dayton and Duquesne are new to our schedule this season,” says King. “The two programs have competed against each other in a dual for a number of years, so I appreciate the willingness of both head coaches to include West Virginia in their races.”
The Mountaineers will then return to the Knecht Cup Regatta, held on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., on Saturday, April 12 – Sunday, April 13, where they will face BIG EAST competitors Connecticut and regatta host Villanova.
“The Knecht Cup Regatta has been a constant on the schedule over the years and will continue in 2008,” says King. “We will use that weekend to race students multiple times throughout the regatta. The Knecht Cup is typically attended by approximately 40 other schools, giving us an opportunity to face some tough competition.”
The Mountaineers will hit the water again on Saturday, Apr. 19, as they face Bucknell on the Susquehanna River, in Shamokin Dam, Pa. Then on Saturday, Apr 27, the Mountaineers will travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to compete in the BIG EAST Championships on Melton Hill Lake.
“For the first time since the inception of the Big East Championship, the regatta will be contested in Oak Ridge, Tenn,” says King. “The Oak Ridge site is where the NCAA championships were held in May and it also annually hosts the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) regatta where many of our varsity members competed last spring.”
To conclude the 2008 season, the Mountaineers will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., on Friday, May 9, for the Dad Vail Regatta.
