Gymnastics: #22 WVU Takes Third at #9 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 22 West Virginia University gymnastics team took third place in a tri-meet at No. 9 Michigan with No. 14 Arkansas Friday night in Ann Arbor, Mich.
WVU tallied 190.3 points. The Wolverines won the meet, topping the Gym’Backs 196.075-195.25.
The Mountaineers had one of their better events of the night on floor in the third rotation. Junior Mehgan Morris and sophomore Shelly Purkat tied for the team high with 9.775s, placing sixth. Senior Katie McGregor hit her routine to earn a 9.65 average score from the judges.
West Virginia’s best effort of the night came on vault, its final event. Freshman Emily Kerwin earned a career-high 9.725 before Amy Bieski hit for a 9.8. Chelsi Tabor added another solid vault with a 9.7 before senior Jaime Gold finished the event with a 9.75. WVU scored 48.500 points on vault.
Morris finished the night with 38.35 points in the all-around, while Bieski had 38.1 points. Bieski's vault placed fourth individually.
Freshman Jessica Young highlighted WVU’s opening rotation on bars. The Monroe, N.C., native stuck her first bar routine of her collegiate career to score a 9.625. Morris scored a team-high 9.675, but the Mountaineers were forced to count a fall towards the team’s 47.325 event score. The Mountaineers then scored just 46.475 points on beam in rotation two.
West Virginia (1-4) returns to action at EAGL rival Maryland on Jan. 18, in College Park, Md.
