Junior Deana Everrett served a perfect ball up the middle to freshman Megan Mischler who tied the match at the 76:26 mark from 16 yards out. The goal was the first of Mischler’s career and Everrett’s team-leading sixth assist of the season.
Syracuse’s lone shot on goal in the match’s first 90 minutes gave the Orange a 1-0 lead. The Orange goal came in the third minute off an SU corner kick. After a scramble for the ball in the box, junior Sarah VanSickle took a shot from 10 yards for the game-winner.
Both teams worked a pair of scoreless 10 minute overtime periods to settle on the tie. West Virginia’s last regular season tie occurred last season at St. John’s in a 0-0 draw.
West Virginia, now 6-3-1 (2-0-1) on the season, could not capitalize on several scoring chances in the first half. The Mountaineers hit the cross bar three times in the opening half, including a near-goal from Everrett. Everrett created a shot from 20 yards out just over the SU goalkeeper’s head and off the post.
A physical Orange team committed 17 fouls on Sunday, the most against WVU this year.
Syracuse moves to 4-4-3 on the season, 0-2-1 in BIG EAST play. West Virginia outshot Syracuse 21 to eight on the afternoon, the sixth time in 10 games WVU has recorded at least 20 shots in a match. The Mountaineers also took 13 corner kicks to the Orange’s two.
Today’s match was the first (0-0-1) overtime outing for WVU this season and fourth (1-0-3) for Syracuse. West Virginia’s last overtime match came against Louisville in the 2006 BIG EAST Quarterfinals where WVU advanced on penalty kicks.
The Mountaineers return home for a pair of BIG EAST games at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 5, WVU battles Louisville at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 7, West Virginia plays host to Cincinnati at 1 p.m.
