MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 20th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team returns to action with a pair of BIG EAST matches this weekend. WVU welcomes St. John’s on Friday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m., and travels to Syracuse on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m.
“We are looking forward to getting back into league play this weekend,” says head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Both St. John’s and Syracuse have good teams and we need to go out and execute our game plan and finish the opportunities we create.”
Friday’s contest marks the 12th meeting all-time between the Mountaineers and Red Storm. WVU holds a 7-2-2 series advantage with last year’s meeting drawing a 0-0 tie (double overtime). SJU is 6-0-2 on the year and is coming off a 1-1 tie with Columbia last weekend.
West Virginia and Syracuse will play for the ninth time, with the Mountaineers holding a slight 4-3-1 advantage in the all-time series. WVU won last year’s meeting 5-0 in Morgantown. The Orange own a 4-3-2 record, its best start since 2004.
Friday’s match is the first of a doubleheader at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium with the WVU men’s team. The nationally-ranked West Virginia men’s squad battles DePaul following the conclusion of the women’s’ game.
