Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Demon Deacons tied the score in the 62nd minute on a goal from forward Jill Hutchinson. Wake’s Sarah Winslow moved the ball up the outside to Kaley Fountain who crossed the ball into the middle. Hutchinson settled the ball off her chest and sent the ball into the back of the net.
The game-winner came in the 86th minute on a Wake Forest corner kick. Fountain picked up her second assist of the match on a ball sent to the far post where Ashley Burney headed in the goal.
“You have to credit Wake (Forest) for putting a lot of pressure on us,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We couldn’t withstand it, and we didn’t capitalize on the chances we did have. We had lots of opportunities but didn’t finish.”
The Mountaineers lit the scoreboard first in the game’s 15th minute. Junior Amanda Cicchini sent a long ball through the middle to a sprinting Deana Everrett. With Wake’s goalkeeper leaving her line, Everrett quickly touched the ball past her and into the corner of the net.
Everrett’s goal was the fourth of the season and 26th of her career.
West Virginia, now 5-3-0 on the year, took five corner kicks and 11 shots on Sunday. The loss is just the second in West Virginia’s last 23 home games (19-2-2) at Dick Dlesk.
Wake Forest registered 17 shots, including eight on goal. The Demon Deacons improved to 5-3-1 on the season.
Next up for West Virginia is a home match against St. John’s on Friday, Sept. 28. Match time is scheduled for 5 p.m., with the men’s soccer team playing in game two of a doubleheader.
