Men's Soccer: WVU Defeats Penn State 1-0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Mountaineer men’s soccer team defeated Penn State 1-0 today to close out the Bert and Iris Wolstein Soccer Classic hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. The win is the first of the 2007 season for the 13th ranked Mountaineers.
Senior Andy Wright headed a goal into the far post in the 41st minute of the first half off of an assist by senior Dan Stratford. PSU fouled freshman Paul Paradise and WVU was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. Stratford placed a high ball which found Wright who hit the net.
WVU outshot Penn State 12-8. Goalkeeper Zach Johnson saw a full 90 minutes in his second collegiate game and recorded three saves.
Both Wright and Stratford earned all-tournament team honors, who are nominated by each individual’s head coach.
Next up, the Mountaineers will travel to Maryland for an 8 p.m. kick off on Friday, Sept. 7 in College Park, Maryland. The game will be taped live by CSTV. The match will air on CSTV on Sept. 9 at 8 p.m.
