MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Due to lighting in the area and Morgantown being placed under a severe weather watch, the West Virginia men’s soccer team was forced to suspend its exhibition match against Kentucky early in the second half of play. The Mountaineers were up 1-0.
Senior Dan Stratford scored the lone goal of the match off of a give-and-go from teammate, senior Andy Wright. Stratford fed the ball to Wright who made a run up the right sideline. Wright found Stratford inside the box who netted a hard left shot.
WVU dominated the first half hitting four shots on goal and five corner kicks in just 45 minutes. UK did not record a shot on goal.
“We have a lot of work to do, but that was an excellent 45 minutes of soccer.” commented head coach Marlon LeBlanc. “We recorded four goals in a game and a half. This is a good soccer team.”
The Mountaineers will open the 2007 regular season on Aug. 31 against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio where they will participate in the Bert and Iris Wolstein Soccer Classic. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
