RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former West Virginia University 5,000-meter national champion Megan Metcalfe won the gold medal in the 5,000 meter race at the 15th Pan American Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, this weekend.
Metcalfe, running for her native Canada, crossed the finish line in 15:35.78, ahead of USA’s Catherine Ferrell (15:42.01) and Mexico’s Leticia Rocha (15:43.80) to claim the gold medal.
Metcalfe won the 5,000 meter run at the 2005 NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., becoming just the third track and field national champion in WVU history joining Pat Itanyi and Kate Vermeulen.
Earlier this month, current WVU distance runner Marie Louise Asselin won the 5000-meter run at the Pan American Junior Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a time of 17:40.28. Asselin will be a sophomore this fall.
"It is a privilege and an honor to work with athletes of the caliber of Megan and Marie Louise," distance coach Sean Cleary said. "Many years of hard work by each young lady have resulted in the finest athletic performances of their careers. For Megan, this ranks right up there with her national championship."
