MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team has been named one of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s (USTFCCCA) women’s Division I all-academic teams.
The Mountaineers had the 22nd highest grade point average (GPA) with a composite 3.32 team average. Arkansas-Little Rock had the highest team GPA at 3.61.
“The coaching staff is proud of the effort put forth by the girls in athletics and academics,” cross country head coach Sean Cleary says. “To have a 3.32 team GPA is remarkable and shows how hard the girls have worked this year.”
Arizona State won the team of the year award which is based on a combination of athletic and academic achievements. The top honor goes to the team that has the best finish at the Division I Indoor and/or Outdoor National Championships and that is also holding the highest cumulative GPA.
To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 GPA. In all, there were 97 Division I women’s programs recognized as 2007 all-academic track and field teams.
WVU also had four athletes recognized by the USTFCCCA for outstanding academic performance last week: Marie Louise Asselin, Keri Bland, Jessica Czaikowski and Abbie Stechschulte.
