MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A week after taking seventh in the BIG EAST Championship, West Virginia University’s track and field team will travel to Wheeling Jesuit’s Cardinal Twilight Meet on Saturday, May 12, in Wheeling, W.Va. Competition is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
The Mountaineers were originally scheduled to compete in the ECAC Championship in Princeton, N.J., but coach Jeff Huntoon pulled his squad out of the meet in order to focus on bigger issues.
“With this being graduation weekend at WVU, I really wanted to give the girls the opportunity to walk with their classes,” Huntoon explains. “Also, this meet is another chance for some of the younger girls to push for NCAA Regional qualifying marks.”
With only two weeks to go before the NCAA Regional Championship in Gainesville, Fla., Huntoon is hoping to put together an experienced group to take to the meet. Five Mountaineers have already qualified to compete: Jessica Czaikowski (100 meter dash, 100 meter hurdles), Keri Bland (1,500 meter run), Marie Louise Asselin (1,500 meter run), Clara Grandt (5,000 meter run) and Abbie Stechschulte (long jump).
“This meet will hopefully allow us to open things up, with the goal of helping those girls on the edge qualify for Regionals,” says Huntoon.
WVU will take next weekend off before competing at the NCAA Regional Championship, May 25-26, in Gainesville, Fla.
