Implemented in 1989 by WVU Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong, the Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a GPA average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 3,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll.
“I am extremely proud of our student-athletes here at West Virginia,” said Garrett Ford, Associate Athletic Director for Student Services. “This event grows each year and began in room 244 of the Coliseum. Then numbers increased and we moved to room 251, then 297 and on to the Puskar Center at the Football Stadium. With his year’s banquet moved to a large room on the Waterfront, it is a fine example of the dedication the students-athletes have made in order to be successful in all areas.”
Students from all 17 sports teams, in addition to Cheerleading and Athletic Training, gathered at the Waterfront Plaza for dinner and acknowledgment of their academic achievements.
“These students have worked hard in the classroom as well as study hall and deserve this recognition,” said Paul Downey, Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes. “Each of them have proven it is possible to balance athletics and academics successfully. They should be very proud of themselves for their accomplishment.”
