MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s track and field squad will host the Mountaineer/Mohigan Invitational on Saturday, April 21, at the WVU Track and Field Stadium. The meet, set to begin at 9 a.m. with the college javelin throw, will be the squad’s only home meet of the season.
The Mountaineers are coming off a very successful weekend spent competing at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., and the Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational in Moon, Pa. All told, WVU had nine BIG EAST, two ECAC and two NCAA Regional qualifiers last weekend.
Currently, four Mountaineers are ranked in the top 60 in the nation in their respective events.
Senior Abbie Stechschulte has the sixth best score in the heptathlon (5,609 points), a BIG EAST and NCAA automatic qualifier. Additionally, the score is an Olympic Trials standard.
Fellow senior Jessica Czaikowski holds the 19th best time in the 100 meter hurdles (13.45) and the 31st best time in the 100 meter dash (11.61). Both are BIG EAST qualifiers and NCAA Regional qualifiers.
Two freshmen are also making waves on the national scene. Keri Bland has the 30th best time in the 1500 meter run (4:23.71), and Marie Louise Asselin has the 52nd best time in the same event (4:25.52). Both times are BIG EAST and NCAA Regional qualifiers.
The Mountaineers will next race at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 26-28. The meet will best the last for WVU before the BIG EAST Championship.
