MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior gymnast Janáe Cox will compete as an all-arounder in rotation with the University of Michigan gymnastics team at the 2007 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships on April 26, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Cox and Michigan will compete in session two on April 26, at 7 p.m., and their rotation order will be as follows: vault, bye, bars, beam, bye, floor.
All-arounders Cox and Julie Dwyer (Auburn) advanced individually from the Southeast Regional last weekend in Morgantown. Michigan qualified out of the Northeast Regional along with Florida while individual all-around competitor Andrea Arlotta of Pitt, also qualified out of that region.
Michigan’s coach Bev Plocki (Fry) is a former WVU gymnast (1985-87), who lettered three years and captained coach Linda Burdette’s 1987 squad. Plocki spent two years as a graduate assistant under Burdette before taking over at Michigan in 1990. The Wolverines edged WVU in the opening meet this season 194.850-194.800 in Morgantown on Jan. 12.
“We are very familiar with the Michigan gymnastics program and I’m sure Janáe will be very comfortable and ready for the competition,” Burdette said. “I know it’s not blue and gold, but it’s pretty close.”
Cox, native of Otisco, Ind., is making her third appearance at nationals in her career after becoming the school’s first 2,000 point scorer ever at last weekend’s meet.
Cox scored 9.9s on floor and vault to bring her career total to 33 scores of 9.9 or better in her career. Cox’s score of 39.100 in the all-around was her 36th score of 39.0 or better, a school record.
The championships consist of 12 teams, 12 all-around competitors (not on qualifying teams) and individual event specialists.
Preliminary team and all-around competition will be conducted in two sessions Thursday, April 26 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The top three teams from each session will advance to the Super Six competition Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. The top four individuals from each session in each event (plus ties) from the preliminary team and all-around competition will compete in the individual-event competition Saturday, April 28 at 7 p.m.
