Baseball: West Virginia to Host Cincinnati

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will host Cincinnati for a crucial three-game BIG EAST series April 13-15 at Hawley Field.
Game one will take place on Friday, April 13, at 7:05 p.m., and will be Dollar Night at Hawley Field with all tickets being sold for $1 and Coca-Cola, hot dogs and pretzels available for $1 each. Game two will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. The final game of the series is set for Sunday, April 15, at 1 p.m.
West Virginia (20-10, 4-5) resumes BIG EAST play after a sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday, April 10. Southpaw Brendan Bergerson and righty Josh Whitlock picked up the wins in games one and two of the doubleheader, respectively. Left fielder Justin Jenkins extended his hitting streak to 29 games, one shy of the school record held by Josh Williamson.
Centerfielder Adam White and Jenkins are leading the Mountaineers with a .400 and a .437 average, respectively. Jenkins has batted in 34 runs while shortstop Tyler Kuhn has added 33 RBI at the plate. Left-handed pitcher Matt Yurish is boasting a 3.12 ERA after 40.1 innings on the mound. Yurish and righty Josh Whitlock have both struck out a team-high 36 batters.
Cincinnati (18-14, 4-5) travels to Morgantown after taking two of three games from Notre Dame. The Bearcats won games one and two, both with a score of 4-3 before the Fighting Irish rallied to take game three. First baseman Neall French is batting .336 on the season to lead Cincinnati. French has notched seven home runs and driven in 39 RBI. Lefty Dan Osterbrock is sporting a 2.97 ERA after 57.2 innings of work. Osterbrock has struck out 53 batters thus far and walked 19. The Bearcats’ game against Xavier, scheduled for Wednesday, April 11, was postponed due to rain.
Last year, WVU swept the Bearcats in Cincinnati to pick up its first three-game road sweep since joining the conference in 1996. The three wins also gave the Mountaineers a berth in the 2006 BIG EAST tournament.
West Virginia leads the all-time series with Cincinnati, 11-7.
