MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s tennis team proved that it had the grit and determination to bounce back from a disappointing loss, defeating BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 7-0, on Tuesday, April 10, at the Ridgeview Racquet and Fitness Club.
Today’s win boosts the Mountaineers’ (11-10, 6-1) series record against the Hoyas to 16-2.
“Today’s outcome was never in doubt, but the tone of the match was extremely important,” says coach Marc Walters. “We had to come in here and make a statement.”
Juniors Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival took it upon themselves to set the match’s tone, quickly defeating Liz Winokur and Adriann Gin in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-0. Senior Ashley Constantine and freshman Gabriela Blaskovicova then secured the doubles team point for WVU, defeating Briana Kearney and Eileen Boyle in the No. 3 match, 8-4.
“Those matches really got the team rolling today,” Walters says. “Ashley and Gabriela lifted the team up with their win.”
The Mountaineers kept the wins coming during the singles matches. Percival and Monica Lyskawa made quick work of their opponents, defeating Courtney Olsen in the No. 2 match (6-3, 6-1) and Winokur in the No. 3 match (6-1, 6-0), respectively. Prinz then battled back from a sudden loss in the first set of the No. 1 match to defeat Stephanie Cohen, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Kelly Walsh secured the victory for WVU, defeating Gin in the No. 4 match, 6-3, 6-4.
“This team is full of girls that are really close to putting it all together,” Walters explains. “Overall, today was one of those days when everyone played well and we won.”
The Mountaineers host their last regular season match when conference opponent Rutgers visits on Saturday, April 14. First serve is set for 10 a.m. at the WVU Tennis Courts.
