Track: Czaikowski Wins ECAC Hurdles Crown

BOSTON – Senior Jessica Czaikowski earned her first ECAC crown and the West Virginia University track and field team placed 11th out of 80 teams at the ECAC Championship on Sunday, Mar. 4, at the Boston University Track and Field Pavilion.
“I was really pleased with today’s efforts,” says coach Jeff Huntoon. “With each girl scoring and setting personal bests, I couldn’t ask for anything more. This weekend’s championship was a nice finish to the indoor season.”
Czaikowski, a Tottenham, Ontario, native, ran to a first place finish in the 60 meter hurdles (8.36) and a fifth place finish in the 60 meter dash (7.57).
Junior Abbie Stechschulte joined Czaikowski on the podium, taking fifth in the hurdles with a time of 8.71.
Also taking fifth was the WVU distance medley relay team. The squad, comprised of juniors Alison Spiker and Maria Stover-Bartlett and sophomores Karly Hamric and Brittany Hohn, finished with a time of 11:46.80.
Sophomore Clara Grandt finished seventh in the 3,000 meter race, clocking in at 9:41.21.
The Mountaineers also had fantastic showings in the field events. Senior Alexis Noel jumped to an 11th place finish in the triple jump with a season best leap of 38.6 inches. Freshman Kristen Loughry also set a personal best in the pole vault, finishing eighth with a leap of 11 feet, 11 inches.
The 2007 indoor track season wraps-up next weekend with the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. Stechschulte is expected to represent WVU in the pentathlon.
